GRIFFIN SPOTZ
Director of Lacrosse, Varsity Head Coach
Griffin Spotz is in his 17th year as a lacrosse head coach in GA and 14th as head coach at Walton High School. He played defense and LSM for the University of Illinois MCLA Club team. He is the original coach that started the Duluth High School boy’s lacrosse team. In 2013, he founded the Dirty Birds Lacrosse program and built it open over a decade.
At Walton he has gone to the Elite 8 eight separate times, as well as the Final Four four separate times. In 2019, Coach Spotz led the Raiders to a State Title, beating Lambert, 8-7 in the Championship game for the 6A-7A Dual Class Title. The Raiders finished the season ranked #1 in the state for all GHSA Lacrosse, 1A – 7A, with a 21-2 record. They also finished the season ranked #3 in the Southeast by Inside Lacrosse Under Armour rankings. Their record of 7-1 against other teams that finished the season ranked in the Top 10 in the state will stand as a testament to how successful their 2019 season was. Coach Spotz was awarded the NFHS Boys Lacrosse Coach of the year for 2019 by the GHSA.
In 2022, Coach Spotz led Walton to their first ever Region Title and Runner Up in the 6-7A GHSA Combined State Championship. In 2022, Coach Spotz also won MDJ Coach of the Year, which he previously received in 2014 and 2019 as well. Since the fall of 2022 he has served as the 7A (now 6A) Ad-Hoc Representative for Boys Lacrosse to the GHSA.
Coach Spotz's teams over the past decade and a half have been awarded multiple Academic All American, All State, and All-American honors, and produced multiple D1 and numerous D2 and D3 players. Coach Spotz specializes in shooting instruction and is regarded as one of the best shooting coaches in the state.
Of highest importance to Coach Spotz is his tight knit relationship with his family unit of four: his wife Natalie, and children Rylan and Ivy. In 2022, Coach Spotz started the K1 age group for Walton Jr. Lacrosse and has loved coaching Rylan and the future 2035s!
Michael Holder
Varsity Assistant Coach
Michael Holder is an East Cobb native who has been around the game of lacrosse for more than 20 years. He played Division II at Young Harris College before finishing his college career at the University of Georgia, playing attack and midfield for the MCLA club team.
During his five years with the Raiders, Coach Holder has helped lead the team to the state championships in 2022 and to the Final Four in 2024. After college, Coach Holder was offensive coordinator at South Forsyth High School, where he was able to advance to the Elite Eight, and was the head coach of the Team 91 2024 Elite team.
Coach Holder loves to spend any time not on the field with his wife, Anna, and his 3-year-old son, Anderson. He is thrilled to be back and ready to make an impact on and off the field with this Walton team.
Josh Baker
Varsity Assistant Coach
Josh Baker is a Texas native who has been playing lacrosse since his teenage years. He played at Berry College where he was a three-time all-conference selection, setting multiple program records. Coach Baker is excited for another season with the Raiders and looks forward to helping develop the team's potential.
Ian Hurley
Varsity Assistant Coach
Ian Hurley is a Roswell native who started his lacrosse career in sixth grade. He would go on to captain at Roswell High School and lead the team to their first state championship. He played at Young Harris College as both a midfielder and attackman, finishing his college career playing at the University of Georgia. He has coached for numerous club teams and organizations including Trilogy Lacrosse, Seven Flames (now Team 91) and Roswell Jr. Select.
Austin (AJ) Miller
Varsity Assistant Coach
Austin (AJ) Miller is a Roswell, Georgia native with deep roots in the local lacrosse community. A 2019 graduate of Lassiter High School, AJ grew up competing for the Thunder and Defenders of Troy programs. He continued his playing career at the collegiate level with the University of Alabama’s club team before transferring to Florida State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 2023.
AJ began his coaching journey in 2018 as a defensive specialist for the Defenders of Troy. Since then, he has expanded his coaching resume to include a tenure at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School and his current role with Roosters Lacrosse Club, where he has been a coach since early 2024.
Austin Greaves
JV Head Coach
Austin Greaves grew up playing lacrosse in Southern California and has traveled the country playing and coaching for multiple programs over the years. He graduated from Poway High School in 2014 after earning multiple league and conference championships.
He started his college career playing for Division II Young Harris College with Coach Holder and Coach Hurley. At the end of his sophomore year, he transferred to Colorado State University to finish his career with the school’s club team, the MCLA Rams. Coach Greaves has coached for multiple 3d Lacrosse programs across the country and is excited to be part of the Walton program this year.
